An exploitable heap-based buffer overflow exists in the handling of TIFF images in LibTIFF's TIFF2PDF tool. A crafted TIFF document can lead to a heap-based buffer overflow resulting in remote code execution. Vulnerability can be triggered via a saved TIFF file delivered by other means.

The bug was discovered 10/25/2016. The weakness was released 01/06/2017 by Tyler Bohan with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5652 since 06/16/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94474 (Debian DLA-693-2 : tiff regression update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
