cPanel Script privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in cPanel (Hosting Control Software) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Script Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 01/11/2017 by Omid with Open Security as Multiple Vulnerabilities in cPanel as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of the project team. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:

A local user can run JavaScript code in other user's domain and access cookies and compromise the victim website. POC : User "hacker" makes ".htmltemplates" directory in hacker's homepage (/home/hacker/.htmltemplates/) and makes "exploit" file containing JavaScript. Now this script can be called from hacker's domain (hacker.com)

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 36 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

The mailinglist post contains the following remark:

cPanel believes that these are not security vulnerabilities, so the issue already exist.
