Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ntpd up to 4.2.8p8 (Network Management Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Origin Timestamp Protection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
NTP before 4.2.8p9 allows remote attackers to bypass the origin timestamp protection mechanism via an origin timestamp of zero. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of a CVE-2015-8138 regression.
The bug was discovered 11/21/2016. The weakness was released 01/13/2017 with Boston University (Website). The advisory is shared at nwtime.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7431 since 09/09/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 28 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95986 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : ntp (SUSE-SU-2016:3193-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371402 (Cisco UCS 6200 Series Fabric Interconnects Multiple Vulnerabilities in Network Time Protocol Daemon (CSCvc23476)).
Upgrading to version 4.2.8p9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95986) and SecurityFocus (BID 94454†).
