A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apache Struts up to 2.3.15 (Programming Tool Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component DefaultActionMapper. The manipulation of the argument action:/redirect:/redirectAction: with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. Multiple open redirect vulnerabilities in Apache Struts 2.0.0 through 2.3.15 allow remote attackers to redirect users to arbitrary web sites and conduct phishing attacks via a URL in a parameter using the (1) redirect: or (2) redirectAction: prefix.
The weakness was presented 07/16/2013 by Takeshi Terada with Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at struts.apache.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2248 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Takeshi Terada and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at struts.apache.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 150153 (Apache Struts Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (S2-016,S2-017)).
Upgrading to version 2.3.15.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13084.
