The HTMLtagproc1 function in file.c in w3m before 0.5.3+git20161009 does not properly initialize values, which allows remote attackers to crash the application via a crafted html file, related to <dd> tags.

The bug was discovered 11/18/2016. The weakness was presented 01/20/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9435 since 11/18/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
