A vulnerability was found in w3m up to 0.5.3 (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function HTMLtagproc1 of the file file.c of the component dd Tag Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The HTMLtagproc1 function in file.c in w3m before 0.5.3+git20161009 does not properly initialize values, which allows remote attackers to crash the application via a crafted html file, related to <dd> tags.
The bug was discovered 11/18/2016. The weakness was presented 01/20/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9435 since 11/18/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim.
