A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.5 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function _TIFFFax3fillruns. The _TIFFFax3fillruns function in libtiff before 4.0.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and application crash) via a crafted Tiff image.
The bug was discovered 06/15/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/20/2017 by Kaixiang Zhang with Qihoo 360 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5323 since 06/06/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 4.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
