A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.6 (Image Processing Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function DumpModeDecode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The DumpModeDecode function in libtiff 4.0.6 and earlier allows attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid read and crash) via a crafted tiff image.
The bug was discovered 06/15/2016. The weakness was released 01/20/2017 by Kaixiang Zhang with Qihoo 360 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-5321 since 06/06/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
