A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 5.6.29/7.0.14/7.1.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function exif_convert_any_to_int of the file ext/exif/exif.c of the component EXIF Data Handler. The exif_convert_any_to_int function in ext/exif/exif.c in PHP before 5.6.30, 7.0.x before 7.0.15, and 7.1.x before 7.1.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted EXIF data that triggers an attempt to divide the minimum representable negative integer by -1.
The bug was discovered 01/19/2017. The weakness was published 01/24/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at php.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-10158 since 01/24/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96799 (PHP 5.6.x < 5.6.30 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370348 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update Sierra 10.12.4, El Capitan 2017-001 and Yosemite 2017-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2017-03-27-3)).
Upgrading to version 5.6.30, 7.0.15 or 7.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
