Details
A vulnerability was found in GraphicsMagick 1.3.23 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function TraceArcPath of the file magick/render.c of the component SVG File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
GraphicsMagick 1.3.23 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via a crafted SVG file, related to the (1) DrawImage function in magick/render.c, (2) SVGStartElement function in coders/svg.c, and (3) TraceArcPath function in magick/render.c.
The bug was discovered 02/11/2016. The weakness was presented 02/03/2017 by Gustavo Grieco (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2318 since 02/11/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 186 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92981 (openSUSE Security Update : GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-2016-984)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175922 (Debian Security Update for graphicsmagick (DSA 3746-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
