Details
A vulnerability was found in GraphicsMagick up to 1.3.25 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function parse8BIM of the file coders/meta.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer underflow in the parse8BIM function in coders/meta.c in GraphicsMagick 1.3.25 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted 8BIM chunk, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 10/10/2016. The weakness was presented 02/06/2017 by Marco Grassi (Website). The advisory is available at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7800 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 59 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95704 (openSUSE Security Update : GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-2016-1430)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169347 (OpenSuSE Security Update for GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-SU-2016:2644-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95704) and SecurityFocus (BID 96135†). See VDB-95509, VDB-95517, VDB-95518 and VDB-96574 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
