A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in MailStore Server up to 10.0.1. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file /search-result/. The manipulation of the argument c-f/c-q/c-from/c-to with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Reflected). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity.
The weakness was shared 01/31/2017 by Tobias Glemser as secuvera-SA-2017-02: Reflected XSS and Open Redirect in MailStore Server as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The attack may be launched remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 10.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
