A vulnerability has been found in Zend Framework up to 1.12.18 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Zend_Db_Select. The manipulation with the input value [\w]* leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) order and (2) group methods in Zend_Db_Select in the Zend Framework before 1.12.19 might allow remote attackers to conduct SQL injection attacks via vectors related to use of the character pattern [\w]* in a regular expression.
The bug was discovered 02/16/2017. The weakness was released 02/17/2017 by Peter O'Callaghan (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-6233 since 07/16/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93921 (Fedora 23 : php-ZendFramework (2016-77e5105570)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350925 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for php-ZendFramework: ALAS-2016-767).
Upgrading to version 1.12.19 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
