Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.10.1 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the file net/sctp/socket.c of the component Multithreading. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-415. The product calls free() twice on the same memory address, potentially leading to modification of unexpected memory locations. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
net/sctp/socket.c in the Linux kernel through 4.10.1 does not properly restrict association peel-off operations during certain wait states, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (invalid unlock and double free) via a multithreaded application. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2017-5986.
The bug was discovered 02/27/2017. The weakness was shared 03/01/2017 by Salvatore Bonaccorso (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-6353 since 02/26/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97640 (Debian DLA-849-1 : linux security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175984 (Debian Security Update for Linux (DSA 3804-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
