Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.6-3 (Image Processing Software). This affects an unknown code block of the component MSL Interpreter. The manipulation as part of a XML File leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The MSL interpreter in ImageMagick before 6.9.6-4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault and application crash) via a crafted XML file.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was presented 03/02/2017 by Bastien Roucaries (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-10068 since 12/26/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97073 (openSUSE Security Update : GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-2017-212)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169721 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for GraphicsMagick (SUSE-SU-2017:0518-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.6-4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97073) and SecurityFocus (BID 95219†). See VDB-97468, VDB-97469, VDB-97470 and VDB-97471 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
