A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.3 (Image Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the file coders/mat.c of the component MAT File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. coders/mat.c in ImageMagick before 6.9.4-0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted mat file.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was published 03/02/2017 by Bastien Roucaries (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-10071 since 12/26/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169786 (OpenSUSE Security Update for ImageMagick (openSUSE-SU-2017:0587-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.4-0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
