A vulnerability was found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.1.0 (Firewall Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the file spywall/blocked.php. The manipulation of the argument u with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in the management console on the Symantec Web Gateway (SWG) appliance before 5.1.1 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via unspecified vectors.
The bug was discovered 12/18/2012. The weakness was presented 07/25/2013 by Wolfgang Ettlingers with SEC Consult Unternehmensberatung GmbH as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Symantec. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-4670 since 06/24/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 219 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/blocked.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69179 (Symantec Web Gateway < 5.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12714 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
