A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.1.0 (Firewall Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the file spywall/edit_alert.php. The manipulation of the argument alertid with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in the management console on the Symantec Web Gateway (SWG) appliance before 5.1.1 allow remote authenticated administrators to execute arbitrary SQL commands via unspecified vectors.
The bug was discovered 12/18/2012. The weakness was released 07/25/2013 by Wolfgang Ettlingers with SEC Consult Unternehmensberatung GmbH as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1617 since 02/04/2013. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 219 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/edit_alert.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69179 (Symantec Web Gateway < 5.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12714 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
