A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.1.0 (Firewall Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Transaction Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in the management console on the Symantec Web Gateway (SWG) appliance before 5.1.1 allows remote authenticated users to hijack the authentication of unspecified victims via unknown vectors.
The bug was discovered 12/18/2012. The weakness was disclosed 07/25/2013 by Wolfgang Ettlingers with SEC Consult Unternehmensberatung GmbH as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Symantec. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4671 since 06/24/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 1 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 219 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69179 (Symantec Web Gateway < 5.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12714 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
