A vulnerability was found in Symantec Web Gateway up to 5.1.0 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the file spywall/feedback_report.php. The manipulation of the argument variable with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in the management console on the Symantec Web Gateway (SWG) appliance before 5.1.1 allow remote authenticated administrators to execute arbitrary SQL commands via unspecified vectors.

The bug was discovered 12/18/2012. The weakness was published 07/25/2013 by Wolfgang Ettlingers with SEC Consult Unternehmensberatung GmbH as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with Symantec. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1617 since 02/04/2013. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 219 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:spywall/feedback_report.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69179 (Symantec Web Gateway < 5.1.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12714 (Symantec Web Gateway Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-008)).

Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
