Affected is the function dissect_dvbci_tpdu_hdr of the file epan/dissectors/packet-dvbci.c of the component DVD-Cl Dissector. The dissect_dvbci_tpdu_hdr function in epan/dissectors/packet-dvbci.c in the DVB-CI dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.9 and 1.10.x before 1.10.1 does not validate a certain length value before decrementing it, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and application exit) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was shared 07/26/2013 by Laurent Butti (Oliver) as wnpa-sec-2013-48 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4930 since 07/26/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69228 (Debian DSA-2734-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121476 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 1.10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
