Wireshark up to 1.10.0 ASN.1 PER Dissector packet-per.c dissect_per_length_determinant numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Wireshark up to 1.10.0 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is the function dissect_per_length_determinant of the file epan/dissectors/packet-per.c of the component ASN.1 PER Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The dissect_per_length_determinant function in epan/dissectors/packet-per.c in the ASN.1 PER dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.9 and 1.10.x before 1.10.1 does not initialize a length field in certain abnormal situations, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was presented 07/26/2013 by Oliver-Tobias Ripka as wnpa-sec-2013-52 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4935 since 07/26/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71268 (Amazon Linux AMI : wireshark (ALAS-2013-251)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156814 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (ELSA-2014-0341)).

Upgrading to version 1.10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86028), Tenable (71268), SecurityFocus (BID 61471†), OSVDB (95713†) and Secunia (SA54296†).
