CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark up to 1.10.0 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function netmon_open in the library wiretap/netmon.c of the component Netmon File Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The netmon_open function in wiretap/netmon.c in the Netmon file parser in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.9 and 1.10.x before 1.10.1 does not properly allocate memory, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet-trace file.

The weakness was shared 07/26/2013 by G. Geshev (Oliver) as wnpa-sec-2013-51 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4933 since 07/26/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69880 (Wireshark 1.8.x < 1.8.10 Multiple DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350493 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for wireshark: ALAS-2013-251).

Upgrading to version 1.10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69880), SecurityFocus (BID 61471†), OSVDB (95714†), Secunia (SA54296†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40828†). The entries VDB-5444, VDB-5992, VDB-5993 and VDB-6000 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
