A vulnerability was found in gdk-pixbuf (affected version not known). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function make_available_at_least of the file io-tiff.c of the component TIFF Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. The make_available_at_least function in io-tiff.c in gdk-pixbuf allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a large TIFF file.
The bug was discovered 02/21/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/10/2017 by Ariel Zelivansky (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mov.sx. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-6314 since 02/23/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
