Details
A vulnerability was found in virglrenderer up to 0.5.x. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function vrend_create_shader of the file vrend_renderer.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the vrend_create_shader function in vrend_renderer.c in virglrenderer before 0.6.0 allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (process crash) via crafted pkt_length and offlen values, which trigger an out-of-bounds access.
The bug was discovered 02/27/2017. The weakness was presented 03/10/2017 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-6355 since 02/27/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97913 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : virglrenderer (SUSE-SU-2017:0798-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169822 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for virglrenderer (SUSE-SU-2017:0798-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97913) and SecurityFocus (BID 96460†). See VDB-97950, VDB-98124, VDB-98149 and VDB-98152 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
