The parseFields function in epan/dissectors/packet-dis-pdus.c in the DIS dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.9 and 1.10.x before 1.10.1 does not terminate packet-data processing after finding zero remaining bytes, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (loop) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was published 07/26/2013 by Oliver-Tobias Ripka as wnpa-sec-2013-47 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wireshark.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4929 since 07/26/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70280 (Fedora 20 : wireshark-1.10.2-7.fc20 (2013-17627)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 1.10.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
