Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Intel VirusScan Enterprise Linux up to 2.0.3 (Anti-Malware Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file NailsConfig.html. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Improper control of generation of code vulnerability in Intel Security VirusScan Enterprise Linux (VSEL) 2.0.3 (and earlier) allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTTP request parameter.
The bug was discovered 12/09/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/14/2017 by Andrew Fasano as EDB-ID 40911 as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-8020 since 09/09/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
A public exploit has been developed by Andrew Fasano and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:NailsConfig.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95812 (McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for Linux <= 2.0.3 Multiple vulnerabilities (SB10181)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11740 (McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (40911), Tenable (95812), SecurityFocus (BID 94823†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1037433†). The entries VDB-97928, VDB-97929, VDB-97930 and VDB-97931 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
