Details
A vulnerability was found in Jasper up to 1.900.11 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function jpc_dec_tiledecode of the file jpc_dec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the jpc_dec_tiledecode function in jpc_dec.c in JasPer before 1.900.12 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a crafted image file, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 10/20/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/15/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-10249 since 03/12/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 146 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99254 (Debian DSA-3827-1 : jasper - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176009 (Debian Security Update for jasper (DSA 3827-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.900.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99254) and SecurityFocus (BID 93838†). The entry VDB-98134 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
