A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version). This issue affects the function megasas_handle_dcmd of the file hw/scsi/megasas.c of the component MegaRAID Firmware Interface. Memory leak in the megasas_handle_dcmd function in hw/scsi/megasas.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS privileged users to cause a denial of service (host memory consumption) via MegaRAID Firmware Interface (MFI) commands with the sglist size set to a value over 2 Gb.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2017. The weakness was released 03/16/2017 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-5856 since 02/01/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97271 (GLSA-201702-28 : QEMU: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169803 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for xen (SUSE-SU-2017:0647-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu-project.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
