A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version now known). Affected is the function virgl_cmd_resource_unref of the file hw/display/virtio-gpu-3d.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Memory leak in the virgl_cmd_resource_unref function in hw/display/virtio-gpu-3d.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host memory consumption) via a large number of VIRTIO_GPU_CMD_RESOURCE_UNREF commands sent without detaching the backing storage beforehand.
The bug was discovered 02/01/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/16/2017 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-5857 since 02/01/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97271 (GLSA-201702-28 : QEMU: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276537 (Fedora Security Update for qemu (FEDORA-2017-62ac1230f7)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu-project.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
