A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.5-4 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function DrawImage of the file magick/draw.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the DrawImage function in magick/draw.c in ImageMagick before 6.9.5-5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted image file.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/23/2017 by Bastien Roucaries (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-10046 since 12/26/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 57 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97317 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2017:0529-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169779 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for ImageMagick (SUSE-SU-2017:0586-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.5-5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
