Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ImageMagick 6.9.4-8 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this issue is the function ReadRLEImage of the file coders/rle.c of the component rle File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the ReadRLEImage function in coders/rle.c in ImageMagick 6.9.4-8 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or other unspecified impact via a crafted RLE file.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was released 03/23/2017 by Craig Young (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-10050 since 12/26/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97073 (openSUSE Security Update : GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-2017-212)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
