Details
A vulnerability has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.5-5 (Image Processing Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function WriteProfile of the file coders/jpeg.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in the WriteProfile function in coders/jpeg.c in ImageMagick before 6.9.5-6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or other unspecified impact via a crafted file.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was presented 03/23/2017 by Bastien Roucaries (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-10052 since 12/26/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97073 (openSUSE Security Update : GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-2017-212)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169740 (OpenSuSE Security Update for GraphicsMagick (openSUSE-SU-2017:0399-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.9.5-6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97073) and SecurityFocus (BID 95181†). See VDB-97468, VDB-97469, VDB-97470 and VDB-97471 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
