A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.3 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the component tiffutil. The DumpModeEncode function in tif_dumpmode.c in the bmp2tiff tool in LibTIFF 4.0.6 and earlier, when the "-c none" option is used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer over-read) via a crafted BMP image.
The bug was discovered 04/07/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2017 by Security Team with Qihoo 360 as HT207615 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-3619 since 03/21/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
An out-of-bound read existed in LibTIFF versions before 4.0.7. This was addressed by updating LibTIFF in AKCmds to version 4.0.7.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 179 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99264 (Apple TV < 10.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171720 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for tiff (SUSE-SU-2018:3879-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
