A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.3 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component tiffutil. tools/tiffcrop.c in libtiff 4.0.6 has an out-of-bounds read in readContigTilesIntoBuffer(). Reported as MSVR 35092.
The bug was discovered 11/22/2016. The weakness was presented 03/27/2017 as HT207615 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9539 since 11/21/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
An out-of-bound read existed in LibTIFF versions before 4.0.7. This was addressed by updating LibTIFF in AKCmds to version 4.0.7.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99134 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (httpoxy)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370348 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update Sierra 10.12.4, El Capitan 2017-001 and Yosemite 2017-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2017-03-27-3)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
