Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown processing of the component Java Plugin File Origin Policy. The manipulation of the argument codebase with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Mozilla Firefox before 23.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.8, Thunderbird before 17.0.8, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.8, and SeaMonkey before 2.20 do not properly restrict local-filesystem access by Java applets, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to read arbitrary files by leveraging a download to a fixed pathname or other predictable pathname.
The weakness was released 08/06/2013 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla as MFSA2013-75 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1717 since 02/13/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:
This affects applets running on the local file system. Mozilla developer John Schoenick later discovered that fixes for this issue were inadequate and allowed the invocation of Java applets to bypass security checks in additional circumstances.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69245 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2013:1140)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121376 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:1140)).
