A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Stack-based buffer overflow in maintenanceservice.exe in the Mozilla Maintenance Service in Mozilla Firefox before 23.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.8, Thunderbird before 17.0.8, and Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.8 allows local users to gain privileges via a long pathname on the command line.
The weakness was released 08/06/2013 by Seb Patane as MFSA 2013-66 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1706 since 02/13/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69278 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (0998e79d-0055-11e3-905b-0025905a4771)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121374 (Mozilla Firefox / Thunderbird / SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 23.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
