Nextcloud Server before 9.0.52 & ownCloud Server before 9.0.4 are not properly verifying edit check permissions on WebDAV copy actions. The WebDAV endpoint was not properly checking the permission on a WebDAV COPY action. This allowed an authenticated attacker with access to a read-only share to put new files in there. It was not possible to modify existing files.

The bug was discovered 10/10/2016. The weakness was presented 03/28/2017 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9461 since 11/19/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
