A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Synology Photo Station up to 6.3 (Network Attached Storage Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file photo/login.php of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation of the argument X-Forwarded-For as part of a Shell Metacharacter leads to a command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. Synology Photo Station before 6.3-2958 allows remote authenticated guest users to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the X-Forwarded-For HTTP header to photo/login.php.

The bug was discovered 09/23/2015. The weakness was disclosed 04/10/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-10322 since 04/10/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1202 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 565 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:photo/login.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

Upgrading to version 6.3-2958 eliminates this vulnerability.
