Python up to 3.4 SSL Module subjectAltNames input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Python. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component SSL Module. Such manipulation of the argument subjectAltNames with the input %00 as part of NULL Byte leads to input validation. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2013-4238. Additionally, an exploit exists. It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Python (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component SSL Module. The manipulation of the argument subjectAltNames with the input value %00 leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The ssl.match_hostname function in the SSL module in Python 2.6 through 3.4 does not properly handle a \0 character in a domain name in the Subject Alternative Name field of an X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, a related issue to CVE-2009-2408.

The weakness was released 08/12/2013 by Ryan Sleevi with Google Chrome Security as Issue18709 as not defined bug report (Website) via Python Software Foundation. The advisory is shared for download at bugs.python.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4238 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The advisory points out:

It's related to Ruby's CVE-2013-4073.

A public exploit has been developed by Christian Heimes in SSL Cert and been published 12 hours after the advisory. The exploit is available at bugs.python.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70266 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS : python2.6 vulnerability (USN-1982-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350503 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for python26: ALAS-2013-241).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86383), Tenable (70266), SecurityFocus (BID 61738†), OSVDB (96215†) and Secunia (SA54393†). seclists.org is providing further details.
