Details
A vulnerability was found in libsndfile up to 1.0.27 (Audio Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function flac_buffer_copy of the file flac.c of the component FLAC File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In libsndfile before 1.0.28, an error in the "flac_buffer_copy()" function (flac.c) can be exploited to cause a segmentation violation (with write memory access) via a specially crafted FLAC file during a resample attempt, a similar issue to CVE-2017-7585.
The bug was discovered 04/12/2017. The weakness was presented 04/12/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at blogs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-7741 since 04/12/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99554 (FreeBSD : libsndfile -- multiple vulnerabilities (5a97805e-93ef-4dcb-8d5e-dbcac263bfc2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169973 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for libsndfile (SUSE-SU-2017:1236-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.28 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99554) and SecurityFocus (BID 97522†). See VDB-99446, VDB-99447, VDB-99754 and VDB-100762 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
