Details
A vulnerability was found in libsndfile up to 1.0.27 (Audio Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function flac_buffer_copy of the file flac.c of the component FLAC File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In libsndfile before 1.0.28, an error in the "flac_buffer_copy()" function (flac.c) can be exploited to cause a segmentation violation (with read memory access) via a specially crafted FLAC file during a resample attempt, a similar issue to CVE-2017-7585.
The bug was discovered 04/12/2017. The weakness was shared 04/12/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at blogs.gentoo.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-7742 since 04/12/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
