Memory leak in the v9fs_list_xattr function in hw/9pfs/9p-xattr.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allow local guest OS privileged users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via vectors involving the orig_value variable.

The bug was discovered 04/25/2017. The weakness was presented 05/02/2017 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-8086 since 04/24/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100250 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS / 16.10 / 17.04 : qemu vulnerabilities (USN-3289-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170142 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for qemu (SUSE-SU-2017:1774-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
