The GUI in Alt-N Technologies MDaemon 7.2 and earlier, including 6.8, executes child processes such as NOTEPAD.EXE with SYSTEM privileges when users create new files, which allows local users with physical access to gain privileges.

The bug was discovered 02/03/2004. The weakness was disclosed 11/29/2004 by Reed Arvin with Secure Network Operations (Website). The advisory is shared for download at secunia.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-2504 since 10/25/2005. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
