The hidden-service feature in Tor before 0.3.0.8 allows a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) in the relay_send_end_cell_from_edge_ function via a malformed BEGIN cell.
The bug was discovered 06/05/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/09/2017 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-0375 since 11/29/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100831 (openSUSE Security Update : tor (openSUSE-2017-690)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170101 (OpenSUSE Security Update for tor (openSUSE-SU-2017:1569-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.3.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
