The bug was discovered 06/13/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/13/2017 by Security Team with Microsoft as KB3203467 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-8508 since 05/03/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1211 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:

A security feature bypass vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office software when it improperly handles the parsing of file formats. The security feature bypass by itself does not allow arbitrary code execution. However, to successfully exploit the vulnerability, an attacker would have to use it in conjunction with another vulnerability, such as a remote code execution vulnerability, to take advantage of the security feature bypass vulnerability and run arbitrary code.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100782 (Security Update for Microsoft Office Products (June 2017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110299 (Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps Security Update June 2017).

Applying the patch KB3203467 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
