Apache HTTP Server up to 2.2.33/2.4.26 mod_auth_digest Authorization Header input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.2.33/2.4.26 (Web Server). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component mod_auth_digest. The manipulation as part of a Authorization Header leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In Apache httpd before 2.2.34 and 2.4.x before 2.4.27, the value placeholder in [Proxy-]Authorization headers of type 'Digest' was not initialized or reset before or between successive key=value assignments by mod_auth_digest. Providing an initial key with no '=' assignment could reflect the stale value of uninitialized pool memory used by the prior request, leading to leakage of potentially confidential information, and a segfault in other cases resulting in denial of service.

The bug was discovered 07/11/2017. The weakness was published 07/13/2017 by Robert Swiecki with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.apache.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-9788 since 06/21/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101787 (Apache 2.2.x < 2.2.34 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157536 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for httpd (ELSA-2017-2478)).

Upgrading to version 2.2.34 or 2.4.27 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (101787). seclists.org is providing further details. Similar entry is available at 108938.
