A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 2.0 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function flashsv_decode_frame
of the file libavcodec/flashsv.c of the component Block Parameters Handler. The manipulation as part of a Invalid Block Parameter leads to a array index vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 07/11/2013. The weakness was presented 08/20/2013 by Michael Niedermayer as avcodec/flashsv: check diff_start/height as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 40 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 0.11.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at 880c73cd76109697447fbfbaa8e5ee5683309446. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
