GnuPG up to 2.0.21 Compressed Packet Parser input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GnuPG. Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Compressed Packet Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The compressed packet parser in GnuPG 1.4.x before 1.4.15 and 2.0.x before 2.0.22 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite recursion) via a crafted OpenPGP message.

The weakness was shared 10/05/2013 by Taylor R. Campbell as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). The advisory is available at lists.gnu.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4402 since 06/12/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70639 (Fedora 18 : gnupg2-2.0.22-1.fc18 / libgpg-error-1.11-1.fc18 (2013-18814)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350508 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for gnupg: ALAS-2013-236).

Upgrading to version 1.4.15 or 2.0.22 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87729) and Tenable (70639). Further details are available at net-security.org. The entry 10308 is related to this item.
