The kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted CMAP table in a TrueType font (TTF) file, aka "TrueType Font CMAP Table Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 10/08/2013 by ZombiE as MS13-081 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-3894 since 06/03/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/26/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70333 (MS13-081: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2870008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90913 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution (MS13-081)).
Applying the patch MS13-081 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
