The bug was discovered 09/12/2017. The weakness was disclosed 09/12/2017 as KB4038777 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is available at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-8736 since 05/03/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. An information disclosure vulnerability exists in Microsoft browsers due to improper parent domain verification in certain functionality. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could obtain specific information that is used in the parent domain.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103127 (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 September 2017 Security Updates), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100319 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Security Update for September 2017).
Applying the patch KB4038777 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
